A Short History of Juhu

Juhu was once a separate island, home to Koli fishing families and coconut groves. Over time, land was filled in, and Juhu became part of the city.

Juhu also has a special place in Indian aviation history. The Juhu Aerodrome, which opened in 1928, is one of India’s first civil airports. On 15 October 1932, J.R.D. Tata landed here on a mail flight from Karachi, via Ahmedabad. This flight was the start of India’s first scheduled commercial air service, which later grew into Air India.

From the 1950s onwards, many film stars moved to Juhu, and it became known as one of Bollywood’s favourite neighbourhoods.

What to See at and Around Juhu Beach

The Sunset

Evening is the best time at Juhu. Crowds gather on the sand to watch the sun go down over the Arabian Sea. Even on weekdays, it gets busy around sunset.

Juhu Food Stalls

Near the main entrance, there is a long row of food stalls. This is one of the most popular places in Mumbai for street food. Prices are reasonable, and the stalls stay open until late at night.
